From flood insurance to clearing yard debris, there are several tools and tasks to help protect your home and neighborhood from rising water and flooding.

Preparing for Floods
Get your home ready for rain:
- Clear leaves and yard debris off streets and storm drains.
- Clear gutters and downspouts.
- Keep yard debris and leaf piles away from drainage ditches and streams so that rising water does not carry the material downstream and block a culvert.

Insurance
Do you have flood insurance? If not, your homeowner’s policy will not cover flooding. You will need to get extra insurance to cover damages related to flooding.
- FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) includes information on determining flood risk, flood insurance, flood risk maps, elevation certificates and how to prepare before a flood.
- NFIP policyholders are eligible to receive up to $1,000 to purchase loss avoidance supplies like tarps, sandbags, and more.
